Top-Down Analysis in Forex: How to Read Monthly, Weekly, Daily and Intraday Charts in Order
Forextity AcademyUpdated October 2026
Top-down analysis is how professionals avoid trading small moves against big ones. You begin with the largest picture, narrow the focus one chart at a time, and only act when every level agrees.
What top-down analysis is
Instead of starting on the chart where you will click buy or sell, you start on the highest timeframe and move down. Each step answers one question and narrows the next. By the time you reach your entry chart you already know the direction, the area to watch and the level you are aiming for.
Which timeframes to use
Style
Chain (highest → lowest)
Scalper
4 hour → 1 hour → 15 min → 5 min
Day trader
Weekly → Daily → 4 hour → 1 hour → 15 min
Swing trader
Monthly → Weekly → Daily → 4 hour
Position trader
Monthly → Weekly → Daily
The seven steps
Read the top chart. Trend up, down or ranging? Mark the nearest major support and resistance.
Locate price in the range. Above the midpoint of the recent range is premium, below is discount. Buyers prefer discount; sellers prefer premium.
Move down one chart. Does the next timeframe confirm or contradict the one above?
Decide the bias — or skip. Trade only when the top two timeframes and most of the chain agree. See multi-timeframe analysis.
Find the area of interest. An order block, fair value gap or demand / supply zone on the lower chart, in the direction of the bias. See Smart Money Concepts and supply and demand zones.
Wait, then trigger. Let price come to the area, then look for a structure shift or rejection on the lowest timeframe.
Stop, target, size. Stop beyond the area, target the first higher-timeframe level, take only trades that pay at least 2R, and size with the position size calculator.
Candles to expect before you enter
Bullish setup: Top-down: higher-timeframe bias first, then an area of interest on the lower chart
Order block: the last down candle before the impulse
Impulse breaks structure (a close above the previous high)
Price returns into the block and rejects: green candle with a lower wick. Enter here
When timeframes conflict
Conflict is information. If the Weekly is bullish but the Daily is bearish, the market is in a pullback or a reversal is brewing; either way the quality of any trade is lower. Waiting is a position too.
Common mistakes
Starting on the 5-minute chart and looking for confirmation higher up afterwards.
Using too many timeframes. Three to five is enough.
Buying in deep premium just because the trend is up.
Ignoring the higher-timeframe target and exiting too early or too late.
How Forextity does it
Choose Top-Down Analysis in the scanner and your trading style. It reads each chart in the chain (trend, premium / discount, 50 EMA, nearest levels), combines them into a weighted bias, finds an area of interest on the entry chart and prints a reference plan with reward-to-risk. It is analysis to learn from, not a trade signal.
