Inside Bar Breakout Strategy: Candles to Expect, Entry, Stop and Target
Forextity AcademyUpdated October 2026
An inside bar is the market taking a breath. This guide shows exactly which candles to wait for, which one to enter on, and how to keep the risk small.
What it is
An inside bar is a candle whose high and low both sit inside the range of the previous candle, called the mother bar. It shows that buyers and sellers are temporarily balanced. The strategy is to trade the direction of the first candle that closes beyond the mother bar.
Why it can work
Pauses compress risk: the stop can sit at the other end of a small, well-defined range, while a move out of the range often carries momentum. Inside bars work best in the direction of the trend and at a level traders already watch.
The candles to expect
Mother bar: a clear candle, roughly 0.8 to 3 times the average candle size (ATR). A tiny candle makes a meaningless pattern.
Inside bar(s): one to three candles whose highs and lows stay inside the mother bar. Wicks that poke out cancel the pattern.
Entry candle: the first candle that closes above the mother bar high (long) or below its low (short), ideally with a solid body.
Context: 21 EMA above 50 EMA for longs (below for shorts), and the pattern near a swing support or resistance.

Step-by-step entry
Spot the mother bar and mark its high and low.
Confirm the next candle (or two) stay completely inside it.
Check the trend and the nearby level. No context, no trade.
Place a buy stop just above the mother bar high (sell stop below the low) — or wait for the candle close.
Enter only after a candle closes beyond the mother bar; a wick that falls back is a false break.
Stop on the other side of the mother bar (the midpoint if the mother bar is tall).
Target the next swing level or three times the risk and risk 1% or less.
Stop and target
Stop: the opposite end of the mother bar, or its midpoint when the mother bar is taller than about 2 ATR (a wide stop would ruin the reward-to-risk). Target: the next swing level, or three times the risk if none is close. Skip trades that pay less than 2R.
Example in numbers
Mother bar high 1.1060, low 1.0990 (70 pips, midpoint 1.1025). Long entry 1.1062, stop 1.1022 (40 pips), target 1.1182 (120 pips) → reward:risk 3.0. At a 35% win rate the expectancy is 0.35 × 3 − 0.65 = +0.40R per trade.
Common mistakes
Trading inside bars in the middle of a range with no level nearby.
Entering on a wick instead of a candle close.
Using a stop at the far end of a very tall mother bar.
Ignoring the trend: inside bars against the trend break out less often.
Frequently asked questions
Is an inside bar bullish or bearish?
Neither on its own. It is a pause. The direction comes from the trend and from which side of the mother bar the price closes beyond.
How many inside bars are allowed?
One to three is typical. More than three starts to look like a range or a triangle.

Choose this strategy in the Forextity scanner. It looks for the pattern on real candles, marks it on the chart, shows an example entry, stop, target and reward-to-risk, scores how many conditions are met, and lists the same steps with the same candle diagrams.
